Meaning and Intention

Although Stella and Kartini were not physically alike, they shared a bond of passion towards education for women. This song represented that bond despite the distance, social class differences and only being acquainted through paper and pen. Stella expresses how much she believes in Kartini and in return Kartini thanks her for giving light and hope in her life that is full of restrictions. I imagine that Stella is like an older sister that Kartini looks up to. I want this song to remind the audience that having a supportive circle around Kartini was crucial to building her confidence and growth as a person. Although she grew up surrounded by people who did not have the same open-mind as her, she stayed true to herself and that attracted the people who are like-minded.

In reference to the way this song was staged, I really wanted to emphasize just how different the two girls are living their lives, in fact even in different timezones, furniture, clothes, etc.

Compositional Choices

Co-produced by Shamshawan Scott. I truly relived my Barbie dream with this track. I grew up watching many Barbie and Disney movies that inspired the sound of the entire musical but this track is the pinnacle of it. I wanted to highlight friendship and girlhood, as most Barbie movies do. The harp was a key instrument in making this track magical. The harp is also an instrument that represents cosmic consonance and harmony— a harmonic bond between the two girls.

Retrospective Assessment

• I might give Kartini more verses. This song is initially more focused on Stella singing to Kartini but after some more consideration, I think it should be more balanced between the two.
