Daun Semanggi
Three-Leaf Clover
European Fantasy
By Kartini, Rukmini and Kardinah
Kartini was left with one source of happiness for a while– reading Dutch books and magazines. One book led to another and then another… Her father had no problem spoiling her with them. Underneath the uncompromising tradition, he truly loved her very much.
1895 then came around the corner, Kartini’s eldest sister married and her older brothers moved away. This marked the beginning of a new era for her. The youngest sisters, Rukmini and Kardinah, both just entered seclusion. Kartini took over the position of oldest sibling. She wished to be loved by her younger sisters, not become estranged or feared.
So they began their new life without a hierarchy. They called themselves The Three-Leaf Clover. Their watchwords were “Freedom, equality and sisterhood.”
Meaning and Intention
This song marks a very important life stage in Kartini’s life. The Three Leaf Clover! We are introduced to Kartini’s two sisters for the first time and how they truly changed her life. The girls are in seclusion, at around the age of 14-16. Although not in depth, we get a piece of their personalities, passions and their collective goal of getting higher education in Holland.
I wanted the audience to develop a strong bond with the sisters to understand how crushing it is when fate unforgivingly brings them apart.
Compositional Choices
This song feels light, inspiring and youthful. One way I achieved that was through staccato notes, using higher octave instruments, and excluding bass. Throughout the song, we hear both pizzicato and staccato strings blended with Splice samples of hands clapping. Then you can faintly hear the high-pitched flute that floats in the air.
This was one of the first compositions I made for this musical and the main inspiration was When Will My Life Begin from Tangled.
Retrospective Assessment
I would add a bridge— I feel like the song could have a great climax point that really ties everything in a ribbon.
I would also try the song in a slightly faster tempo, to evoke more of the youthful excitement and fire.

RISE AND SHINE GIRLS!
WE GOT WORK TO DO!
A BUSY DAY AHEAD
WE’VE GOT NO TIME TO LOSE
WE’LL START WHERE WE LEFT OFF
YESTERDAY
AND I’LL LEAD A DISCUSSION
ON THE BOOK THAT WE READ
(speak-singing)
WE HAVE TO BE FLUENT IN DUTCH
IT’S THE FIRST STEP TO OUR DREAM
WE’LL GET TO SPEAK OUR MIND
AND THEY WILL HEAR
KARTINI, KARDINAH, RUKMINI
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK
TO GET ONE STEP CLOSER
TO THE THOUSAND HURDLES AHEAD
IT WILL BE WORTH THE TEARS WE SHED
OH EUROPE, YOU’VE TAKEN OVER OUR MINDS
WHEN WILL YOU BE MORE THAN A FANTASY?
FANTASY
RUKMINI
I’LL START WHERE I LEFT OFF
ON MY PAINTING
THEN TOGETHER WE MAKE BATIK
OUT IN THE GARDEN
I LIKE TO MAKE MY OWN PATTERNS
IT’S MY FAVORITE THING TO DO
EXPRESSING THROUGH MY ART
AND THEY WILL SEE
KARDINAH
WHEN IT’S LUNCH,
I HELP THE MAID
AND I AM HER SOUS-CHEF
I’M LEARNING TO COOK
SO I CAN BE INDEPENDENT
WE’LL KNOW WHEN IT’S 5 O’CLOCK
THE GAMELAN STARTS TO PLAY
IT’S OUR FAVORITE TUNE
LET EVERYONE HEAR
KARTINI, KARDINAH, RUKMINI
ALL IN A DAY’S WORK
TO GET ONE STEP CLOSER
TO THE THOUSAND HURDLES AHEAD
IT WILL BE WORTH THE TEARS WE SHED
IT’S A ROAD WE’RE WILLING TO TREAD
TREAD
OH EUROPE, YOU’VE TAKEN OVER OUR MINDS
